How is Campaigns different from Follow Up Series?

What are the features of a Campaign?

Campaigns is AWeber's email automation platform containing four primary actions--a trigger to begin the campaign, and the ability to send a message, add wait times in between each action, and apply tags.

You can have multiple campaigns within one list, which can run individually or concurrently. This allows you to send the right message to the right person at the right time. Campaigns allows for flexibility in regards to which subscribers are added to the campaign through the different "triggers" available. You can trigger a campaign immediately when a subscriber is added to the list or you can trigger a campaign based on a certain tag being applied.

Tags serve multiple purposes within campaigns, not only can you apply tags to or remove tags from subscribers using the "Apply Tag" action, but you can also apply tags to subscribers through open and click automations. An open automation occurs when a subscriber opens a particular message and a click automation occurs when a subscriber clicks a specific hyperlink within a message. You can use these automations and tags to trigger additional campaigns, which allows you to automate your messages based on subscribers' interests and behaviors.

You can use broadcast message automations to trigger campaigns, as well. For example, if you were to send out a re-engagement message to your inactive subscribers, you could use an open automation to apply a tag if they open the message. Then, you could trigger a campaign based on that tag so that you can continue to engage with them.

Campaign messages will send based on the timezone that you were located in when you created the campaign, so if you were located in you were located in the U.S. Eastern timezone, those messages will send at the specific send windows in U.S. Eastern Time.

After a campaign is created, you are able to leave the campaign in a draft status until you're ready to make it active. When using Campaigns, you can decide if you want to pause a campaign, close the campaign to avoid any new subscribers from entering it, or stop the campaign entirely.

What are the features of a Follow Up Series?

A Follow Up Series consists of a series of messages that are automatically sent to subscribers in sequential order. The follow ups are delivered to subscribers once they reach the interval you have set for each message.

Note: Follow up #1 will always be sent immediately once subscribers are active on the list.

A Follow Up Series will send messages to all subscribers added to the list. You cannot filter a follow up series based on tags like you can a campaign. You can pause the series by adjusting the wait interval of a particular message or by managing it from the Campaigns page, but these messages are generally sent to the subscriber until they complete the series of follow ups. Follow Up Series messages can be sent based on the subscriber's local time or in U.S. Eastern Time.

A Follow Up Series can be paused, but it cannot be stopped or closed unless the messages are deleted. As soon as a Draft is added to the Follow Up Series, the Follow Up Series immediately becomes active. You can turn a follow up series in to a campaign by importing the follow up sharing code.
