How Can Subscribers Opt Out of Segments Using Tags
Subscribers can be placed in specific groups, called Segments, using Tags. These are a key feature in segmenting, because they can be added and removed using Automations in your messages. This means that subscriber engagement with your content can be used to control what segments subscribers are in and move out of. With this you can have subscribers opt out of specific Broadcast Segments, without needing to unsubscribe from all the content on your list wholly.
When using click automations you will want to communicate to your subscribers that their feedback has been received. Since the subscriber is clicking on a link, you can route them to a website afterwards of your choosing. You can make a thank you page on your site or Create an AWeber Hosted Landing Page. Customize it to your liking and provide a quick acknowledgment that your subscriber has opted out of this content path.
Once published your Landing Page will provide a URL you hyperlink into your content. Keep it simple, and communicate clearly. Hyperlink Text in a Message or Customize a Button and state the subscriber would be opting out of the content they are receiving if clicked. Doing so will trigger the automation that adds and/or removes tag from the subscriber based on your settings. For segments based on having a specific tag, removing the tag will automatically remove them from that segment.
For Broadcasts
When sending your broadcast messages to your segments, you'll select your intended audience in the broadcast settings. Under "Audience", click "Edit" to select the segment of subscribers you would like to receive the message.
To add automations to your Broadcast, click the "Add Automation" button located under the, "Automations" section. In this section, you can choose to add or remove a tag if a subscriber has clicked a link in your message. Click the "Select Trigger" dropdown and choose "Clicks a Link".
Once you've selected your trigger, you will select the link used in your "opt out" hyperlink, and fill out the tag fields to apply or remove the appropriate tags. After typing your tag be sure to hit the "Enter" or "Return" key on your keyboard so that a grey box appears around the tag. Once you have completed setting up your Automation, click the blue "Apply Automation" button.
After that you will continue to arrange the settings in your broadcast as normal. Once sent out, the subscribers who click on your link to opt out, will have the tag needed to remain in this particular segment removed. They will stay on your list, and receive any messages sent to other segments they are a part of, but will have opted out of this one. It even means that should they change their mind, the tag can be reapplied and they'll be back on track.
